Notable updates include no-cost routine in-network lab services and the continuation of $0 copays for primary care visits under qualifying plans.

Humana’s Medicare Advantage plans for 2027 will feature $0 or low-cost monthly premiums, along with enhanced dental, vision, and hearing benefits. These plans will be accessible in 2,600 counties across 45 states and Washington, D.C., extending to over 80% of U.S. counties—a modest contraction from the 2026 coverage area, which spanned 46 states and 85% of counties. The company is also standardizing core benefits across most plans to make comparisons easier for beneficiaries.

Notable updates include no-cost routine in-network lab services and the continuation of $0 copays for primary care visits under qualifying plans. Humana’s Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans (C-SNPs) will now operate in Pennsylvania, Utah, and Wisconsin, while prescription drug coverage remains a key priority. Aaron Martin, Humana’s president of insurance, stated that these changes are designed to improve access to care and affordability through bundled offerings.

As Humana refines its geographic coverage, broader trends in the Medicare Advantage sector are emerging. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) expects average monthly premiums to decline by 16.5% in 2027, dropping from $14.37 in 2026 to $12. While supplemental benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage are projected to remain consistent nationwide, premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses will differ depending on the plan type.

Aetna, now part of CVS Health, is also introducing $0 or low-premium plans for 2027, complete with dental, vision, and hearing benefits. Its lineup includes HMO, HMO-POS, and PPO options, with varying network restrictions. PPO plans permit out-of-network care at higher costs, whereas HMOs generally require in-network providers for medical services. Nearly 99% of Medicare beneficiaries will have access to at least one plan in 2027, and approximately 80% of current enrollees can retain their existing plans without facing premium increases.

Humana’s recent adjustments follow its decision to exit underperforming plans, which may impact around 600,000 members. Company leaders have emphasized a target of achieving a 3% profit margin by focusing on less profitable contracts. Meanwhile, CVS Health has revised its full-year earnings forecast upward, citing cost controls, pricing strategies, and favorable member demographics as key drivers of growth.

The Medicare Advantage enrollment window runs from October 15 to December 7, with CMS advising beneficiaries to review their options annually, as plan details may shift. While supplemental benefits are holding steady, the industry’s broader movement reflects insurers seeking to balance expanded coverage with financial stability, a trend that will likely influence future policy designs.
