New Study Highlights Benefits of Honey Tallow Balm

Honey tallow balm combines traditional fats with natural sweeteners to create a moisturizing skincare product.

How the mixture works on skin

Skincare experts note that tallow has a unique fatty acid profile closely resembling the natural oils in human skin. This means it sinks right into skin and helps restore the natural moisture barrier. The added honey acts as a humectant, attracting and retaining moisture while also providing antimicrobial properties that support clearer complexions.

Beeswax helps thicken the mixture and creates a breathable protective layer on the skin. Unlike petroleum jelly, which can feel heavy or greasy and does not feed skin, beeswax helps lock in moisture while still allowing the skin to breathe.

The inclusion of tamanu oil adds another layer of support for skin healing and recovery. Research shows it can help reduce redness and inflammation while improving marks left from acne damage. For people dealing with blemishes or irritated areas, the combination of these ingredients targets multiple concerns at once. When the skin barrier becomes compromised through over-cleansing or harsh treatments, this type of balm helps nourish and support the skin while maintaining moisture balance rather than forcing it into compliance.

Ingredients and preparation

Grass-fed beef tallow serves as the base of the mixture. The recipe calls for ½ cup of tallow along with 1 teaspoon of beeswax pellets. One tablespoon of raw honey and one tablespoon of tamanu oil are also required. Essential oils such as tea tree or sweet orange provide additional benefits and a pleasant scent. The total preparation time is approximately 31 minutes.

To make the balm, add the tallow and beeswax to the top of a double boiler and melt over low heat. Once completely liquid, add the tamanu oil, essential oils, and honey, then stir. Pour the mixture into a mixing bowl and let it cool in the fridge until it hardens slightly but is not yet rock hard. Use a mixer to cream the balm until it looks whipped and smoothed. Transfer the finished product into glass jars for storage.

Store the balm in a cool, dry place. The honey may want to separate as the product cools, so stirring as it cools and mixing well helps prevent this. A small amount goes a long way; applying a thin layer over clean skin allows the body heat to soften the balm so it glides easily over the face or other areas. If the skin feels greasy afterward, the amount used was likely too much.
