Health care prices rising far faster than inflation have been a major driver for health care reform within the United States. As in most other nations, the manufacture and production of prescription drugs and medical units is carried out by non-public companies. The analysis and improvement of medical units and pharmaceuticals is supported by both private and non-private sources of funding. In 2003, research and improvement expenditures were approximately $95 billion with $40 billion coming from public sources and $55 billion coming from non-public sources. These investments into medical analysis have made the United States the leader in medical innovation, measured either in terms of income or the variety of new drugs and gadgets launched.
